KNOW OUR ACTIVITIES
In promoting education and cultivating Vietnam's next generation of leaders, Canon launched the "Canon - For the next generation" program in 2009.
A CSR program which aims at developing Vietnamese education and providing a better learning environment for underprivileged pupils, Canon helps schools with financial difficulties which are mainly located in poorer provinces. The objectives of the program are improving school infrastructures such as providing clean water, improving better sanitation, renewing the campus in giving a new coat of paint for all the classrooms and enhancing the surrounding greenery by planting trees around the school. Adding to it, Canon also brought in computers, books and other study materials. For each school, both teams from Canon and Le Bao Minh – Canon's distributor in Vietnam voluntarily rendered their time in the various schools.
The program "Canon - For the next generation" was launched in April at two primary schools Tinh Cuong and Chuong Xa in Cam Khe District of Phu Tho province. After that, it proceeded to Nha Long of Thai Nguyen province, An Nhon of Ben Tre province and Nghia Dan of Hung Yen province. In December, 2009, the program proceeded to 2 primary schools in Bac Giang and another 2 in Tien Giang and Dong Thap.
"Canon – For the next generation" once again affirms Canon's Kyosei philosophy which benefits the people and community where it operates: "Living and working together for the common good".
In providing relief to the victims, Canon has sent its representatives to Quang Ngai, one of the most seriously suffered provinces to give its support of 700 gifts to the victims of the province. The value of the relief totals more than VND 300 million, which is timely in playing a part of recovering these victimes to their normal life.
The relief delegation includes staffs from Canon Singapore representative office in Vietnam and Le Bao Minh, Canon's local distributor. They all came with a big love toward the victims of Tan Phuoc village, Binh Minh commune, Binh Son district and Quang Ngai province. 700 relief aids are given to difficult families, who suffered severe damage from the flood. A relief pack includes rice, clothes and cash which aims to help victims overcome this difficult times.
Besides cash donation from Canon and Le Bao Minh JSC, Canon staffs also contribute actively to the cause by offering their money and time in working on the affected flood areas.
Tropical storm Ketsana which is the 9th storm hitting Vietnam this year, has seriously damaged the central provinces of Vietnam. As a result, many houses were devastated, leaving the people penniless and homeless. Among them, Quang Ngai is the most heavily damaged province leaving 27 deaths, 3 missing and 112 injured persons, not forgetting the thousands who were separated by the storm.
"Support victims of flood areas" project is another demonstration of Canon's long-term commitment in Vietnam, also once again affirming Canon's Kyosei philosophy which is "Living and working together for the common good".
"We have seen and learnt from the media recently about the serious damages on the Vietnam Central region. We felt moved to do something and as a corporate citizen in the Vietnamese community, this naturally urges us to do something", said Mike Asao, Chief Representative of Canon Singapore in Vietnam.
Under the awareness of Ha Noi Department of Education and Training as well as representatives of Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Canon Vietnam Co. ltd. held the program 'Environment Protection' for pupils of grade 2, 3, 4 and 5 successfully at the Nam Trung Yen primary school – Hanoi and Dap Cau primary school – Bac Ninh on 22nd October 2009. Following the same success in 2008 at Cat Linh primary school, the 2009 program receives huge participation from teachers and students.
The program is implemented to raise awareness of environment protection for pupils and informing them to protect the environment through every small action in their daily lives.

The main content of the program includes propaganda and games for pupils. The propaganda aims to inform students' basic knowledge of the real environmental situation in Vietnam as well as in the world. The content of the program is illustrated by vivid images so that they can understand the real situation of environmental pollution in Vietnam hence informing them on the importance of environment protection. The program also guides students to follow the 3R in protecting the environment. 3R is the abbreviation of 3 English words, meaning reduce - reuse – recycle. As 3R is still not widely known among the students, the program strives to guide students in implementing 3R through practical and easy steps. In addition to theoretical guiding, the program also provided questions. Students participated in 2 games namely "reuse" – using used things to make new things, and "rubbish classification" where they learn how to classify rubbish correctly in segregating organic, inorganic and recycled rubbish. Through these interesting and useful games, students can easily understand and remember the actions they can do to protect the environment.
Mr. Sachio Kageyama – General Director of Canon Vietnam said "Human beings exist together with environment. Environment is the air for breathing, the water for drinking and living, and makes up of plants and all the things surrounding us. Environment is an integral factor to human beings. Thus, we have to protect the environment."
Mr. Sang, representative from Ministry of Education and Training, spoke that "this is a highly educational program. Improving pupils' awareness on protecting environment is very necessary so that they can cultivate the habit of protecting environment from now". Representatives attending the program also appreciate and praise this practical program that Canon Vietnam has implemented and thank the Company for its environmental protection efforts.
With the success of the program, Canon Vietnam expects to expand the program to more schools in Hanoi city and other provinces so that this project will become a regular CSR activity of the company in contributing to environmental protection activities.
